Cooling: When cooling is needed, the thermostat powers the reversing valve and closes circuits R and Y, starting the compressor and outdoor fan. The indoor blower also starts automatically. Once cooling demand is met, these circuits open, stopping the compressor and outdoor fan. The blower may continue for a short time to improve efficiency.
Heating (Heat Pump): For heating, the thermostat closes circuit R to Y, starting the compressor and outdoor fan without energizing the reversing valve. The indoor fan starts simultaneously. When heating is satisfied, these circuits open, stopping the compressor and outdoor fan.
Auxiliary Electric Heat: If extra heat is needed, the thermostat closes circuit R to W, energizing heater sequencers and the indoor blower. Upon reaching desired temperature, these circuits open, turning off the heating elements, while the blower continues until all elements are off.
Defrost (Heat Pumps): The system automatically defrosts when ice buildup is detected on the outdoor coil, by measuring temperature differences or by time intervals. The defrost cycle terminates when the coil temperature rises or after a set time.
