Before Operation:

  • Inspect the area for objects that could interfere with the machine.
  • Familiarize yourself with controls, safety signs, and safe operation.
  • Check operator-presence controls, safety switches, and guards.
  • Shut off the engine and allow the machine to cool before servicing.
  • Inspect cutting assemblies and evaluate terrain for proper equipment use.
  • Wear appropriate clothing, eye protection, and hearing protection.
  • Do not carry passengers. Keep bystanders and pets away.
  • Ensure all guards and safety devices are in place and functioning.

Fuel Safety:

  • Fuel is flammable and explosive. Prevent static charge by placing the machine directly on the ground before filling.
  • Fill the tank outdoors when the engine is cold. Wipe up spills.
  • Do not handle fuel while smoking or near open flames.
  • Do not add fuel while the engine is running or hot.
  • Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors and keep fuel away from eyes and skin.
  • Store fuel in approved containers out of reach of children.

Adding Fuel:

  • Use clean, fresh unleaded gasoline (87 octane or higher).
  • Ethanol blends up to 10% are acceptable; avoid E15 or higher.
  • Do not use gasoline containing methanol.
  • Use a fuel stabilizer/conditioner for longer storage.

Performing Daily Maintenance:

  • Before starting each day, perform the daily procedures listed in Maintenance.

Breaking in a New Machine:

  • Allow 40-50 hours for new engines, decks, and drive systems to develop full power and performance.

Using the Rollover-Protection System (ROPS):

  • Keep the roll bar in the fully raised, locked position and use the seat belt to avoid injury or death from rollover.
  • There is no rollover protection when the roll bar is down.
  • Lower the roll bar only when absolutely necessary and never wear the seat belt when it is down.
  • Drive slowly and carefully, checking for overhead clearances.

Using the Safety-Interlock System:

  • Do not tamper with interlock switches; check their operation daily.
  • The system prevents starting if the parking brake is not engaged, the PTO is not disengaged, or motion-control levers are not in NEUTRAL-LOCK.
  • The engine shuts off if motion-control levers are moved from NEUTRAL-LOCK or if you rise from the seat while PTO is engaged.
  • Test the system before each use.

Positioning and Adjusting the Seat:

  • Move the seat forward/backward for best control and comfort.
  • For MyRide™ systems, adjust rear-shock assemblies for a smooth ride.
  • For non-MyRide™ systems, turn the seat-suspension knob for comfort.

During Operation Safety:

  • The operator is responsible for preventing accidents.
  • Use full attention; avoid distractions. Do not operate while ill, tired, or under the influence.
  • Contacting the blade can cause serious injury. Ensure the engine shuts off when the key is turned off.
  • Operate in good visibility and weather. Avoid lightning.
  • Keep hands and feet away from cutting units and discharge opening.
  • Do not mow in reverse unless necessary. Look behind you.
  • Use extreme care around blind corners and objects.
  • Stop blades when not mowing.
  • If the machine strikes an object or vibrates, shut off the engine immediately.
  • Slow down and use caution when turning and crossing roads.
  • Before leaving the operating position, park on a level surface, disengage PTO, lower attachments, and engage the parking brake.

Additional Safety Precautions:

  • Shut off the engine and remove the key. Wait for all moving parts to stop.
  • Operate the engine in well-ventilated areas.
  • Never leave a running machine unattended.
  • Attach towed equipment only at the hitch point.
  • Use only approved accessories and attachments.
  • Sound levels can cause hearing loss; wear hearing protection.
  • Keep children away from the machine and operating area.
  • Be alert and shut off the machine if children enter the operating area.
  • Look down and all around before backing up or turning.
  • Do not carry children on the machine.

Rollover Protection System (ROPS) Safety:

  • ROPS is integral; do not remove components.
  • Ensure the seat belt is attached and can be released quickly.
  • Keep the roll bar raised and locked, and always wear the seat belt.
  • Check overhead objects before driving under them.
  • Replace damaged ROPS components.
  • No rollover protection when the roll bar is down.
  • Avoid edges, steep banks, and water to prevent rollovers.
  • Do not wear the seat belt when the roll bar is down.
  • Lower roll bar only when necessary; raise it as soon as clearance permits.
  • Take the machine to an Authorized Service Dealer after a rollover.
  • Use only Toro approved accessories and attachments for ROPS.

Slope Safety:

  • Slopes are a major factor in loss of control and rollovers.
  • Review slope instructions and use an angle indicator.
  • Never operate on slopes greater than 15°.

Removing the Mower Deck:

  • Lock out spring-loaded deck arms.
  • Park on a level surface, disengage PTO, and engage the parking brake.
  • Shut off engine, remove key, and wait for parts to stop.
  • Place height-adjustment pin in 7.6 cm (3 inch) location.
  • Remove belt covers and mower belt.
  • Remove bolts and nuts from the front of the plate under the footrest and from the sides of the machine.
  • Slide deck out to the right side.

Replacing the Grass Deflector:

  • Remove locknut, bolt, spring, and spacer.
  • Remove damaged or worn deflector.
  • Place spacer and spring onto deflector.
  • Place J-hook end of spring behind deck edge and around deflector.
  • Install bolt and nut.
  • Ensure deflector rotates freely.

Cleaning:

  • Cleaning under Mower Deck (After each use): Park on level surface, disengage PTO, engage parking brake. Shut off engine, remove key. Wait for parts to stop. Raise deck to TRANSPORT position.
  • Cleaning Suspension System (Machines with MyRide™, Before each use or daily): Use compressed air. Do not clean shock assemblies with pressurized water.

Disposing of Waste:

  • Dispose of engine oil, batteries, hydraulic fluid, and engine coolant according to state and local regulations.

Storage:

  • Storage Safety: Shut off engine, remove key, wait for parts to stop. Allow machine to cool before servicing. Do not store near flames or in enclosed trailers. Do not store near open flames, sparks, or pilot lights.
  • Cleaning and Storage: Disengage PTO, engage parking brake. Shut off engine, remove key, wait for parts to stop. Remove grass clippings, dirt, and grime. Wash machine with mild detergent and water (do not pressure wash). Check parking brake, service air cleaner, grease machine, change oil, check tire pressure, change hydraulic filters, charge battery. Scrape grass/dirt from underside and wash. Run engine with PTO engaged for 2-5 minutes after washing. Check blades.
  • Prepare for Storage (over 30 days): Add petroleum-based fuel stabilizer. Run engine for 5 minutes. Shut off, cool, and drain fuel tank. Start engine until it stops. Dispose of fuel properly. Do not store fuel with stabilizer longer than recommended. Remove and check spark plug, add oil to cylinder, crank engine. Install spark plug (do not connect wire). Check all bolts/nuts/screws. Paint scratched surfaces. Store in a clean, dry area. Remove key and keep out of reach of children. Cover machine.

Troubleshooting:

  • Engine Overheats: Reduce load, check oil, clean cooling fins/air passages, clean air cleaner, contact dealer if fuel is dirty.
  • Malfunction-Indicator Light (MIL) comes on: Engine too hot, old fuel, fuel shutoff valve closed, dirty air cleaner, battery not charged, incorrect filters, loose connections, low battery voltage, blown fuse. Consult manual or dealer.
