Preparing Your Camcorder

Before recording, prepare your camcorder following these steps:

  1. Connect a power source (battery pack, AC power adaptor, or car battery).
  2. Set the date and time using the lithium battery for the clock.
  3. Insert a video tape with the window facing outside and press PUSH to close.
  4. Adjust the viewfinder lens for clear vision.
  5. Adjust the grip strap for a comfortable hold.
  6. Remove the lens cap and attach it to the grip strap.
  7. Close the AUTO LOCK cover.

The camcorder will automatically adjust focus, white balance, back light, and shutter speed. For manual adjustments, refer to specific pages.

Start Recording

  1. Hold the camcorder securely with the grip strap.
  2. Remove the lens cap.
  3. Set POWER to CAMERA.
  4. Close the AUTO LOCK cover and operate the zoom lever.
  5. Slide STANDBY up to enter standby mode.
  6. Press START/STOP to begin recording.

To pause, press START/STOP again. To stop, slide STANDBY down and set POWER to OFF.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Symptom Indication in the viewfinder Cause and corrective actions
The START/STOP button does not operate. • The POWER switch is not set to CAMERA.
• The tape is affixed to the drum. Remove the tape with the cassette eject button. (page 20)

The date/time indication blinks for 5 seconds in the viewfinder after setting POWER to CAMERA. "AM 12:00:00" blinks
The current time indication blinks.
• The lithium battery is not installed.
• The lithium battery is exhausted.
• The lithium battery is weak. Install a new lithium battery.
The tape does not move when a tape transport button is pressed. , battery lamp fast blinking • The POWER switch is not set to VTR.
• The tape is at its end.
A vertical band appears when a subject such as lights or a candle frame is shot against a dark background. • The contrast between the subject and background is too high; the camera is not malfunctioning.
The color of the playback is not appropriate. • The AUTO LOCK cover is not closed completely. (page 28)
• Shooting conditions are not suitable for auto white balance operation. Adjust the white balance manually. (page 31)
The playback picture is not clear. ✔ blinking • The channel or input for the camcorder is not selected on the TV. (page 49)
• The EDIT switch is set in the direction of the arrow. (page 52)
• The video heads may be contaminated. Clean the heads using the Sony V8-25CLH cleaning cassette. (page 59)
When both the VIDEO AUDIO jacks and the AC power adaptor are used to connect signals, the picture on the TV is not clear or moves vertically. • The IN/OUT selector is set to OUT. Set it to IN.
The power turns off or does not turn on. , battery lamp fast blinking

• The battery is used up.
• The battery is weak. Attach a charged battery.
• The battery is not attached.
• The AC power adaptor is not connected to a wall outlet.
• The CHARGE/VTR selector on the AC power adaptor is not set to VTR (DC OUT).
• The ambient temperature is too low.
• The battery pack has not been charged fully.
• The capacity of the battery pack itself is shortened. (page 17)
The battery pack is quickly discharged. , battery lamp blinking • The power is not supplied to the camcorder.
• The battery is used up.
The tape cannot be removed from the compartment. , battery lamp blinking • Moisture condensation has occurred. (page 58)
