Getting started

Use this section to get familiar with camera controls, set up your digital camera for use, and begin taking pictures.

Camera top and back

  1. ON/OFF button.
  2. Power light.
  3. Shutter button.
  4. selector - Switches between Picture Capture, Video Record, and Playback.
  5. Zoom lever - Accesses zoom, Thumbnails, and Magnify functions.
  6. USB connector.
  7. Flash button - Accesses flash settings.
  8. Delete button - Accesses the Delete function.
  9. ▲ and ▼ buttons - Scroll through menus and images.
  10. Menu/OK button - Displays menus, selects options, and confirms actions.
  11. Back button - Returns to the previous menu or view.
  12. Image Display.

Before taking pictures

  • Charge the battery: Fully charge the battery before first use.
  • Install the battery: Open the battery door, insert the battery, and close the door.
  • Turn on the camera: Press the ON/OFF button.
  • Choose the language: Use ▲▼ to select language, then press OK.
  • Set the region: Use ▲▼ to select region, then press OK.
  • Set the date and time: Use ▲▼ to adjust values and → to move between fields.
  • Install and format memory card: Insert card, then use menu to format it.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Issue Solution
My image is blurry. Use Focus Lock, Steady Photo shooting mode, a tripod, or improve lighting. Set flash to Auto or On and shooting mode to Action.
My image is too bright. Turn the flash off or move back and use zoom.
My image is too dark. Wait for better lighting, use flash, or add indirect lighting. For subjects out of flash range, turn off flash, use a tripod, and check flash working distance on www.hp.com/support.
My image is grainy. Add indirect lighting, use flash, wait for better lighting, use Steady Photo mode, avoid excessive digital zoom, and keep the camera cool.
Images are missing on my camera. Check internal memory or transfer images to memory card.
The camera gets warm (or even hot) to the touch. This is normal. Turn off and let it cool. Store in a cool place.
My camera stalls when establishing a connection to the computer. Ensure USB cable is connected, try another USB port, turn camera off/on, or reset the camera. Contact HP Support if problem persists.
The HP Photosmart Software does not start automatically when I connect to my Macintosh. Configure camera preferences in System Preferences.
