The Argus C-3 is a 35mm camera featuring a built-in behind-the-lens shutter. It is known for its shutter mechanism which is inexpensive to manufacture, easy to service, and dependable. The camera has a release button for taking photos and a setting lever. The speed knob, often part of a "Matchmatic" system, controls shutter speeds which can range from 1/300 to 1/10 second. "Bulb" operation is available by turning the release button to 'B'. Disassembly involves removing the front plate by unscrewing it from the camera body. Key components include the shutter escapement, shuttlecock assembly, speed cam, and various levers and springs that control the shutter's timing and operation. Reassembly requires careful attention to the timing and placement of these parts, especially the eccentric bearing for speed adjustments.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Symptom Cause Remedy
Shutter blades fail to remain open on "bulb" or open only part way. Release cam out of adjustment. Hold shutter open on "bulb," loosen release cam screws, turn main lever body clockwise until blades are fully open, then retighten screws.
Shutter blades open and close before release cam is arrested on "bulb." Release cam out of adjustment. Loosen release cam screws and turn main lever body counterclockwise in relation to the release cam.
Retard action detected at 1/300 second. Eccentric bearing adjustment incorrect. Loosen bell crank screw, turn eccentric bearing to eliminate retard at fastest speed, and ensure only a trace at the next-to-highest speed. Bend wire link if necessary for rough adjustment.
Shutter fails to fire flash at the correct time (sync issues). Sync cam out of adjustment. Loosen sync cam screw and adjust cam to change flash firing time.
